Do you suppose the companies that make the
formulas somehow support the medical schools and manage to influence the
doctors to discourage breast feeding?

Sadly Marie I think you're right. I read an article that in the 60's the doctor's offices carried pamphlets of how great formula was for your child and that doctor's received a kick back for promoting it, a number of women during that time went through the binding procedure. While in univ. I took a course on Canadian Sociology, our prof. chose a text that dealt mainly with American Sociology, he received a free cruise trip for his choice. We live in a society that is fast paced and runs on convenience: credit cards, car leases for 3 years (no more garage waits, just get a new car), medical walk-in centres, fast food outlets, preprepared dinners, microwaves, loans over the phone in an hour... - everything at our finger tips, we get what we want when we want it. Mabe it all started with the invention of electricity - flick on a switch and you've got light no more matches and oil lanterns, or the flush toilet - no more digging a new pit, the automobile???? ;')

Personally I think people are wising up, for instance I had teens come to my farm this year to pick strawberries - no adult forcing them, it was for their picnic. Strangely enough there is a Mac's Convenience store just down the road from me. A sign of hope. Jacqueline
