There's a strong point to be made about competing with fast food and other
convenience product companies. The do have advertising budgets and they do
aggressively market.

I was watching a movie yesterday with my daughter and there were several
commercials for Monostat. After the 3rd or 4th repeat I said, "they must
consider this to be a women's movie" or what my husband calls a "chick
movie". Endless commercials for dish soap, mini-pads, etc...

I gave a lot of thought to the setup and design of my stand at the market.
I decided not to go with a farmer image but as a sort of boutique stand. A
'specialty' stand. I charged higher prices and had a slightly different
customer base. It didn't mean I was rude to poor people. In fact, I often
made good deals for them and also participated in the WIC program.

My stand also promoted the merits of eating food grown without the
pesticides. I consider those marketing tools. One of my best customers
told me I should have a huge sign that said I was pesticide free. One you
could see from across the market as you walk into the lot. Maybe she was
right.

It would be a worthwhile discussion here to cooperatively design some plans
for promoting fresh food at our markets, in our communities and in our
schools. And not just for farmers' markets and CSA's but for the general
good.
