We aren't too far from these two, either, I suspect. After all, we now have
government controlled auto industry, and subsidization of food production.
Simple step to what you describe.

If food were managed like health care, it would be illegal for you to grow
and process your own food. Food could only be obtained from licensed
restaurants. The only thing on the menu would be lobster and fillet and if
you
couldn't pay for that, you just go away and starve. The rationale would be
that if you were left to make your own food choices, you might poison
yourself so it has to be managed by professionals.

If transportation were managed like health care, you could only drive a
brand new vehicle and you could not pump your gas, change your oil, nor put
air
into your tires. After all you might make a mistake and cause an accident.
It'd be either pay 1/2 you income for the privelege of transportation or
walk, only those two choices.
