Once again, cause and effect reversed. Statins statistically lower deaths due to arterial blockage etc. This is because, when your artery is damaged and a layer of LDL is placed over the wound, if it won't heal it can run like a stocking causing more and more LDLs to be layered over the wound thus eventually blocking the artery. It is like placing more gauze over a bleeding wound as the blood soaks through when what it needs is a few stitches. You could get a huge pile of gauze before the wound heals on it's own. If this was an artery in the heart, the bandages could cause a blocked artery and therefore a heart attack before the wound heals. Statins do NOT reduce inflammation. They reduce the reaction to inflammation, i.e. layers of LDLs covering the inflammation.
Statins function by not only inhibiting the liver's ability to produce LDLs, but they also accumulate in the liver and "recall" LDL's that are already in the body. I don't think they can raise HDLs, however, they can "improve" the ratio of LDLs to HDLs by lowering the LDL count.

Statins do lower death rates from all causes, however, and it's not
clear why. One theory is that they reduce the amount of inflammation
in the body, and inflammation is a major cause of damage to arteries.
That would explain why they lower LDL and raise HDL.
