Bob, are you familiar with the old joke:

"What kind of dog is that?"
"He's a rhinoceros hound."
"A what??"
"A rhinoceros hound. He chases away rhinoceroses."
"That's ridiculous. There's not a rhinoceros within ten thousand miles of
here!"
"Yes, exactly! See how good he is!"

That's the position I'm in when I opine that 99% of what ails us is self
induced. No, no need to ask, almost no one agrees with me. I am a decade
your
senior and I am subject to all and sundry ailments that go with that age.
But
years and years ago, when I was in my 30's and people in their 50's said,
"You
just wait ... it will catch up with you one day! You're just lucky you don't
have the same terrible pain in all the diodes down the left side like I do
(see note below)." Now I'm older than they were then and I still don't.

It's because, and this is my spiel, that when there were two ways of doing
anything ... one that involved being old and decrepit and saying "can't
expect a
person like me to do that" ... and another way the used, stretched, and
challenged every muscle and joint that bade fair to seize up, I made a point
and
habbit to choose the latter.

It won't cure everything, but it will improve anyone's lot.

But how are you to know? Am I just lucky or did I really chase off all the
rhinoceroses?

James

Note: "the terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side" for you
non-Doulas-Adams fans is the signature line of Marvin the Paranoid Android
who was
always morose and complaining. Asked to do anything and he would say, "The
told me to go fetch Beeblebrox, me with a brain the size of a planet, do you
call
that job satisfaction because I don't. Oh no, the humbe robot goes about his
task, and me with his terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side."
