Most church people I know use their church connection for personal
business advancement. Seems like we are all cold and calculating.
It's real obvious that you don't live in the Bible Belt.

Bev, Heartwood is in the Bible Belt. I have not grown up here but I have spent many years here and I know the people. I like them. Church is part of their lives. Church is also part of their business lives.

First, I know you are from WI? and CA, live part of the year in AZ...and only spend summers at Heartwood. I venture to say that most of the church people you know aren't residents of your county.
Secondly, I think there are probably varying degrees of being in the Belt. (I apologize in advance for those who I will offend with my words) You can be totally and culturally surrounded by Bible thumpers, or you can just live among some Christians who attend church regularly. There is a difference. In my town, half the stores are closed on Saturday(large SDA population) and the other half are closed on Sunday(large Baptist population). Some stores are closed on Wednesday all day, and some close early in preparation for Bible study and church. Some even consider Wednesday a 'mini-Sabbath' of sorts...a mid week rest... 98% of the population are not just regular church goers, they are BELIEVERS. Most churches have less than 100 members, so it doesn't make "business sense" to join a church for that, and if someone tried that, they would be outted pretty quickly, and then reminded of the reason for attending a worship service.
