Read Dreams From My Father. He moved with intent. Besides, someone with no job experience can't expect to get paid much. That was an OJT position.

He went looking for a job in Chicago because it was where Farrakan was from, the "intellectual center of black nationalism."

The qualification for the job was being black. He was hired by Calumet Community Religious Conference to run their Developing Communities Project. Their aim -- convert black churches into "agents of social change." They were a bunch of white guys and they needed a front man.

He was told by the various churches he was supposed to be working with that "It might help your mission if you had a church home," So, to further his job, he went looking for a church. I'd say that is a pretty cold and calculating reason to "get religion."

All that community work he did before he went to law school? I don't
think he got paid very much at all. And that just isn't the sort of
work that a cold person can do well.
