I believe that is a part of the president's plan. You're right that we
need temporary workers -- with not as many illegals crossing the
border this year, some crops rotted.

The number coming across remains high and many fewer are returning for even short visits because returning to the US is so expensive and risky. The net result is that the number is illegals is growing.

All that fuss you heard about rotting crops is just that, fuss. The growers want a guest worker program that forces the people to return south so the growers do not need to house then and allows them to pay sub minimum wages.

The big reason that fewer wanted to work the fields was because more jobs opened up in better paying fields such as construction. Now that construction is dropping, many will return to the fields. Construction permits in over built Riverside County dropped by half of what they were last year.

I have a good friend who farms about 150 acres in the Salinas Valley near Hollister. His is a wholly organic operation. He has had no problems getting labor, illegal and legal but the recent Spinach scare has harmed his operation and he has had to let some salad crops rot in the field. Nothing about illegals, just the panic du jour.

When he was senator, that former governor and wanna be president, Pete Wilson inserted language in the last immigration reform bill that effectively made it impossible for INS agents to go into a field and check residency status.

In a message dated 11/12/2006 2:24:10 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, lurine AT softcom.net writes:

People watch the ads on television and believe them. They don't do their homework. They go in the booth and mark the party line. They do NOT question authority! P.S. has succeeded!

I am afraid you are right, and the Democrats won as a result. We have watched a year of anti Bush ads and ads trying to tie various candidates to Bush, since Bush was not running, he ran no ads at all. The various Republican candidates certainly did not run ads refuting the Anti Bush ads or they would tie themselves to him. So after a year of everyone watching this, how could anyone do anything but vote for the Democrats. Now there is plenty of substance to many of the claims against him, but the Dems are still the masters of the media.
