Propane is way too expensive AND the cost of propane anything is double to
triple the cost of the plain old electric. You can get propane fridges and
freezers from most propane suppliers.

Propane refrigerators are very much more expensive to run that then normal electrical unit. The reason being that they are absorption units. What this basically means that a heating element (electric) or a flame heats a powder which turns into a gas. The gas absorbs heat to return to a powder. The normal refrigerator uses electricity to run a compressor that compress a gas into a liquid to estract heat and a liquid into a gas to absorb heat.

The old, "little one" is from the late 1960's(maybe early 70's) and is
*not* frost free. I just went out and looked at it, and I found the
tag..it's 16 cu ft. and made by J.C. Penney. LOL....I don't see any
kind of date. It still works fine, despite being 30+ years old. (my guess)
As far as re-evaluating, from the recent conversations, I won't go
propane....lol.....chances are that I will get another large upright
when it comes time to replace one of my current ones.
When you have a farm, you end up freezing all kinds of stuff...cheese
cultures, colostrum, wild game, candles, ice packs, etc.
The first time I raised pigs, I went to the local Dolly Madison store
and bought 2 racks of their old bakery items and brought that home. It
all went into the freezer and I doled it out to the pigs everyday. I
also used to freeze goat milk, and I still freeze chicken and rabbit broth.
Now that I think about it, I tested the freezer when it was almost empty
right after I first got it years ago. I guess I really should watch the
'clock' and log some kw hours to recalculate it now that it is full.

I'd re-evaluate. That sounds a tad high. I think our frost-free 18 cu. ft. runs about $6 to $8 a month. Less if it is full.

Lynda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bevanron" <erthnsky AT bellsouth.net>

I don't have anything propane other than the grill...how much is propane running these days per gallon? I know I spend $16 a month keeping the "little" freezer running. I have no idea about the "big one". I didn't think $16 was too bad for as old as it is..but
maybe I should re-evaluate...
