If you add a clutch and gear assembly that allows the motor to start
no-load, then the load is applied more gradually, would place even less
stress on the batteries.

A handy clutch would be an auto air conditioning drive clutch. It is already set for 12V and is designed to start under speed.

I wouldn't want to use an inverter anywhere except
where it was absolutely necessary. For the most part, they are an
unnecessary expense and a waste of power.

An inverter is only about 95% efficient under full load and can be much worse under part loads. I use the smallest I could find to drive the laptop charger. I have a 400 Watt for any larger loads and will limit to that.
