Does your electric co. allow "net-metering"?

Don't know. If they don't, we co-op owners will write the rules.

"Do batteries start your car?"

No. A battery turns a starter motor which is geared to turn the engine over while the spark plugs spark and ignite the gas/air mixture in the cylinders which is what provides the power to run the engine.

"For your heat you still need to rely on wood or fossil fuels."

In some climates, yes. In many climate zones, passive solar plus earth connection, earth berming, tight construction, good insulation, modern windows and mass can take care of heat requirements.

Climate is a choice.
