I joined the Debian-java list only two weeks ago because I want to
start with java. Please don't consider my private (uneducated)
opinion as the official opinion of the java team.

There is JDK 1.1.7v2 in the non-free tree. I filed a bug report
"New version available" to the maintainer, that there is an 1.1.7v3.
To understand, why JDK goes into "non-free" you have to read
the Debian policy (I'm no policy expert). I've heard about
some quirks with the changed policy for Java 1.2 / 2 which avoid
the inclusion in Debian. I'm also not happy about that fact
and in deed I do not understand it as well. I could foreward
a question to the debian-java list if you like that (or you
could subscribe yourself (there is low traffic, just about 3 mails
per day).

By the way I treid to package the JDK 1.2 from blackdown for my
on purpose but I failed because of a luck of knowledge in Java
related things ...

As I learned now my interest is only in freetds JDBC, because
I need a free JDBC driver. (Hope this is the right list for those
questions.

Kind regards

Andreas.
