I copied BL2 to another partition and 'upgraded' glibc to 2.3.6
by copying over all the libraries in /lib that included *2.3.6* and
chrooting there and running ldconfig.

(I do not have the 2.3.6 solibs package, just SW11 installed to a partition. I did not copy over libpthread, libpcprofile, libmemusage, a newer ldd and ldconfig.)

Now when I try to load seamonkey I no longer get GDK errors about Xlib and
locale, so that part was fixed by changing glibc.

But it still will not load. I get back the prompt.

firefox 1.5 and seamonkey 1.1.15 have identical dependencies except that seamonkey also needs libXi, and it was compiled against libstdc++.so.5 not 6, and will accept the older Slackware 8.1 libgcc_s.so.1. (The pango-cairo stuff is needed by the Installer version of SM 1.1.05 and by Seamonkey 2 and Firefox 3).

Precompiled firefox 1.5 was missing:

libgcc_s.so.1 (wanted GCC_3.3 version)
libstdc++.so.6

I copied both from Slackware 11 to /usr/lib/

Now firefox acts like seamonkey - neither loads, same strace output.
So if firefox works in upgraded BL2, so should seamonkey 1.1.15.

Which libraries did you upgrade and from where to work with Firefox 1.5?
I am obviously missing something.
