From Sindi

regarding gqview from Slackware 8.1 (glibc 2.2.5)

Extract, copy, and ldconfig four shared libraries from gtkglib from
Slackware 7.1 gdk gtk gmodule and glib. .so (no .a or .la)

install the gdkpixbf package from Slackware 7.1 and then delete
files that went into /usr/share /usr/doc/ /usr/include (needed only for
compiling), anything /usr/lib/*.a or .la. I think you need one so library
and a config in /usr/bin.
I will try to make a package of required parts from all three of these
packages.

From the gtk package you ONLY need the four so libraries.
From gqview I think just the README and the binary.
From the gdk package probably just the .so libraries (in /usr/lib/ and
also a subdirectory *pixbuf* - I will check and make a complete minimal package soon.)

If you go into the directory where you photos are loaded, it looks there
for photos by default. Everything is working except it segfaults if you
make thumbnails in a directory containing pings, with a complaint about
being compiled for an older libpng than is in use on the computer.

It also crashes frequently when run on a matrox card, complaining of the wrong number of scanlines. It is happy with an ATI card that does not even work at all with svgalib, and requires hitting F5 while booting with loadlin to work with Xvesa.

Can anyone suggest a linux program that crops (in X) while showing the removed part darker or lighter or not at all? My partner has little imagination and can't see the cropped picture properly if it is just demarcated by a line. He has been holding up pieces of paper against the screen.
