I found a precompiled linux version of MaPiVi, which needs glibc 2.3.
I have 2.2.5 from SW8.1. Maybe 9.0 has 2.3?

What is GLIBC_PRIVATE which the program also wants besides 2.3?

Slackware 8.0 uses glibc 2.3.1.
The precompiled linux version that wants 2.3 is 0.72.

I copied Slackware 11 to /dev/hda11 but loadlin keeps trying to boot to
/dev/hda1 - is this a built-in limitation of loadlin? I will try lilo.

I made a lilo boot disk (copied the Slackware 11 kernel to /hd/boot after mounting /dev/hda1 /hd, pointed lilo at /hd/boot instead of the usual location because I am past the first GB of hard disk). Slackware 11 boots when I enter SW11 at the prompt. I have posted my lilo.conf for DOS BL2 BL350 - just add a section for SW11 with that kernel (which I renamed vmlinux.s11 when I copied to /hd/boot).

The 0.72 mapivi won't execute. Command not found. (Similarly to trying to run a text file). I downloaded it because it was 2.6MB bz2.

Next I tried to download the 4MB un-zipped 0.91 and 0.97 using lynx but they both stopped after about 500K. wget complained of too many redirections. I am currently downloading with Opera. (I cannot get icewm to switch back to the first workspace to check on progress, nor will VT3 work at the moment - just horiz stripey effect).

I don't know which glibc these later versions require. I tried to write the author at the email address at the mapivi site but it bounced back.

These precompiled versions supposedly include or do not need perl. Ditto for the Win32 version, but 98 and XP both complained of missing some perl module when I tried to install.

If I had enough pieces of perl I could try to compile the 'perl version' (source code) for older glibc, or maybe Steven could do that (for the Slackware 4 libc5?).

The precompiled Win32 version requires Perl and the Windows Perl packages
are over 20MB.
They are supposedly not needed.

The main sourceforge download is about 3K/sec, Dublin mirror 5.2K/sec.
It should only take about 20 min to download the oldest version and check why it will not run with glibc 2.3.1. ldd works on it. If I try to run it with glibc2 it tells me it needs 2.3, but then 'command not found' if I give it 2.3. There are, suprisingly, no X11 libraries needed.

If the 0.97 version can be made to work, it would be usable with BL3 after adding glibc version used by Opera and a few pieces of Image Magick and jpegtran (console programs). gPhoto as compiled by David Moberg would work for photo downloads.

Most people tell me they only use their computer for email, wordprocessing, and photo viewing and managing. For printing they just stick the memory card into the printer, or take it to the store.
