The dependencies are also needed by netpbm,

Are you saying that netpbm only works if you
upgrade the libraries in BL3? Surely it must
be possible to compile it under libc5?

I posted a libc5 version compiled by David Moberg, and a glibc 2.2.5 version that the maintainer of netpbm helped me to compile.
Both versions require libraries (jpeg tiff png) that are also required by links2 when compiled with svgalib support.

20th-century computers (386, 486, P1) perform
better on the 20th-century library (libc5).
I advise BL3 users with 20th-Century computers
not to upgrade the BL3 libraries.

I am using 20th century desktop computers which are 500MHz and have 128MB or more of memory. BL3 is better on our laptops, which are 486 or pentium up to 233MHz and have 16-32MB memory. svgalib uses less memory than X.
The default version works on video chips which are difficult to set up under X (i740, i810, chips, neomagic).

which is smaller than gs

GhostScript is libc5 (available from Slackware 4.0).
Any size difference between gs and netpbm probably
disappears when you install the bloated glibc2
library (apparently required by netpbm).

netpbm does not require glibc2. Opera does. A lot of websites won't work with lynx or links2 (even with its limited javascript). Links2 works with more websites when you add SSL support.

I like netpbm for printing images. People keep sending me scanned images to translate (in pdf form usually). I can trim the images first if they are larger than my printer will print (it does not do 1/4" of the margins).

Opera is the only program that has ever caused me problems when running without a swap file in 16MB.
