Hi,
For Newbies the best distribution I have seen is
Peanut Linux, I highly recommend it.
for old machines (486, Pentium with less than 16MB)
try version 7.x or 8.1
for medium hardware (Pentium 1 or 2 with less than
64MB) try version 9.1 or 9.5
for Pentium III or better with at least 128MB try
version 12.x
