ppmlabel - Add text to an image
ppmdraw - Draw text, lines, shapes, etc. on an image (from a file or the
screen).

There is also:

pbmtextps
render text into a PBM image using a Postscript interpreter which
makes use of GS. I have never used it.

as for BDF fonts I haven't tried that ether. Pbmtext has an other very
interesting facility apart from the BDF font the might be helpful
here. Selects a font that you supply yourself as a PBM file in a
special form. You simple make an image of (for instance a screendump
ore convert a ps to image) your favorite font setup in a special way
the is described in the documentation and the size you prefer and than
you can use that font. Very good for special font the you find
somewhere but can not get in the format you need.

I forwarded your question to someone who has compiled DOS netpbm and also
to the maintainer of netpbm. I also sent him the link to Mikkel's
po-netpbm page.

I have already done that my self and we have had a little exchange
that I have put some part of on a comment page that I link to from the
po-netpbm page.
