For that kind of money, you should be able to buy
several 486 laptops. I love 486 laptops.

We have had XT laptops with 1 or 2 floppy disks and sometimes a hard drive, an XT luggable, a 286 luggable and laptop, and I think we still have three working 386 laptops one with 3MB RAM (runs linux slowly) and
two working 486s (with 12MB and color, and with 2MB and no color).

What about gmail with BL, all that TLS/SSL stuff?

Should work fine on a 486. If you need a GUI don't try with 3MB RAM.
