Why doesn't that surprise me? I've often thought that computers
and the internet have gone downhill since the mid-eighties (since
control passed from Academia to Business). Is that when 486's
were in general use?

I bought a new XT (8MHz) in 1986. I used it until about 1999. 386s were around by 1990. 486s until about 1995 with some overlap with 60MHz PIs after that.
