I tend to access my mail with DOS because I can print it directly from DOS
but not from linux. These modems won't work in DOS. Does anyone want to
help figure out why I can't print the mail with linux after setting up all
the modules and printcap and switching to 'user' which I need to do to use
printcap?

The telnet protocol does not provide for routing data automatically to
a local printer, AFAIK. Is kermit supposed to support printing from
telnet? When you try to print from it, do the file(s) actually show up
in the print queue?

DOS kermit supports printing of my email directly to my printer,
direct-dialed and I think also telnetted using Kermit telnet.

Linux kermit does not, in my experiment. I don't recall the details.

I will try to answer your question in a few days. I think first I need to
insmod lp as root, then switch to user, then kermit as user. Please
remind me how to look at the print queue. I normally don't use lp and
printcap, just cat and netpbm to print.

Why can't we print with lp as root? Is there some file missing or
truncated that normally supports this?

David

At my site I have summarized my experience with printcap. It still won't work as root but I can su to user (I compiled my own busybox with su). If I try to print a page of text it prints a blank page. It prints pdf or ps using ghostscript.

DOS kermit lets me print text emails directly. Maybe the linux kermit is set up to print ps and I would need to modify some file somewhere? This is way beyond my understanding.

I don't recall if DOS printed without kermit (dial ISP then telnet).
I will report back.

The message when I try to print from linux (kermit) goes by too fast to read. I don't think anything makes it to the print queue. lpq no entries.

I am asked whether to print to ANSI. If you have an sdf account try it yourself - Y for prYnt (to ANSI). What does ANSI mean here?
