This hybrid approach didn't work, sorry.

I didn't realize this involved a USB floppy drive. That definitely won't work with BL3 unless you compile a kernel with the USB floppy modules built in. Looks like combining the two floppy disks, however that's done, would be the only way you could boot your laptop to BL3. I mean, apart from using the qemu image I provided.
