I thought about that, but I wouldn't know how to go about it.

I did all of that, exactly as written.

All that happened was that I got an extra file called "tmp" that
consisted of a sequence of (to me) meaningless statements.

But no visible executable that wasn't there before.

I think I will stick with this - booting SW9.1 - it is less complicated
than booting BL2 with a different kernel, insmodding some stuff, and then
attempting to run something I still cannot compile successfully anyway
(except in SW9.1).

I did an LDD on gphoto2 - there are a lot of those libraries missing from
my version of BL2, not just libgphoto2 related.
I still have vivid memories of when I added some other extra libraries to
this installation before, and it took a long time, complete removal of all
those ill-fitting libraries and re-writing of all the symlinks, and much
patience from Stephen, to get it to even boot again.
I am not going to risk doing that again, especially with an installation
of BL2/SW7.1 that is becoming more mission-critical every week. I think I
will keep access to this camera restricted to SW9.1, where it just simply
works.

But thanks for trying. All that info will be useful when I "upgrade" to a
better camera, i.e. one that doesn't use PTP.

Regards,
Ron
