I don't think so. I use the vesa driver from MPlayer and it has
decent playback. Xine can do the same with X. This is on a 300MHz
Pentium II.

No, I don't. MPlayer has its own driver architecture.

Yes. Many of them require a toolkit like gtk, but some even do
the fill-in forms.

pstopnm seems redundant then.
