Supposedly a really fast video card with onboard RAM helps
compensate for a slower cpu. We have one Nvidia to try in the
600MHz computer.

A video card with motion compensation. You need drivers and other
things. If you have a 600MHz processor, you should not need this.

I read somewhere that we would need a faster video card for this speed cpu. I think they recommended at least 900MHz for a regular video card. I presume by drivers you mean I would need to recompile the kernel (as for framebuffer) and who knows if SW7.1 even supports this. We already have a standalone DVD player (found at the curb, working, with TV - amazing what people throw out around here, maybe because the TV was only 13"?)
Maybe next year I will attempt linux with DVD, after someone gives us their old obsolete 1GHz board.

Are there issues with the Slackware xpdf?

It is out of date and will not work on pdf 1.5 files, which came
out some time this past year or so. People keep sending me scanned
documents that they convert to pdf 1.5 before emailing. The IRS
puts out its documents are some format of pdf designed to be filled
in, which even gs 8.50 which I compiled (for glibc 2.2.5) prints
out half a page down, so I had to use xpdf 3.0 on those too. I
think it was pdftops, and then I could print with gs.

I may need to research the various free pdf viewers.
Are there others besides xpdf and gs?

I should try pstopnm from netpbm next.

pstopnm just uses ghostscript.

gs can directly convert to pbm format too. -sDEVICE=pbm
