I have not managed to get this working - I just get the help page
for mpg123 and 'broken pipe'

wget -O - http://audio.ibiblio.org:8000/wdav-24k|mpg123

Is the above correct?

Try telling mpg123 to use stdin as the input file:

wget -O - http://audio.ibiblio.org:8000/wdav-24k|mpg123 -

This worked. On my slower connection I counted 6 gaps in the sound in 20 second. Using mpg123 http:/.... alone, I counted 13 gaps. I recounted with wget in case the connection had just gotten worse and it was 7 gaps. Switching back and forth, my general impression was that it was a bit more listenable with wget as the buffer. This is probably the worst time of day to be listening (4-5 pm) so the best time for testing.

I will try zip BL3 on other people's connections.

Or do this:

wget http://audio.ibiblio.org:8000/wdav-24k &
mpg123 wdak-24k
mpg123 index.html

Neither works - no such file for wdak-24k, and for index.html it tried to play something but could not (I had to Ctrl-C).

(try both to see which file is created)

I also tried mpg123 `(paste in the above string not including |mpg123)`

That won't work.
I meant wget `..... of course.

Is there some linux mp3 player that buffers better?

Quite a few. Xmms, x11amp, MPlayer, Xine...

The problem may be the connection rather than the buffer. When I download MP3 files to play them they come at 2.7K and less. But I will give mpg321 a try (or a look at the FAQ - maybe they added a buffer since they used code from xmms, MAD, and plaympeg).

These all sound like large GUIs. I will look more into mpg321 and mp3blaster.

Good idea. Xine is a library, usually used with a GUI frontend, but CLI is
available, too. MPlayer is CLI by default, but there are many GUIs for it,
including livid, which turns it into a video editor.

Mplayer looked like it had 25MB of dependencies. How big is your static version?

I will read about Xine and the others but I think a faster connection will be needed.

E. Europe does not seem to do streaming MP3. Some day I will have to deal with Mplayer.

My partner listens to Recordings for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. They are still sending out tapes but will probably switch to CD. He wonders if he can rip the CD to mp3 and somehow speed it up (delete one out of three sampled bits) since he likes to listen faster. He has modified tape players to let him adjust the speed (different size pulleys, resistors, switches - various approaches).
