It's highly educational (and very nerdy) to send a message
using telnet. It really shows you what is going on beneath
the surface (a million miles from point-and-click).
-----------------------------
telnet SMTP-server-address 25

I typed:
telnet mail.wccnet.org 25

'unable to connect to remote host Connection refused

Without the'25' it asks me for login and password.

This isthe outgoing mail server that works in eznet.confg.
Is it always 25?

Would the message need to be typed or can it be a file name?
Is there some easy way to add a base64 attachment this way?

Can one telnet to the incoming server to read mail (or download it)?

helo
mail from:your-email-address
rcpt:recipient-email-address
data
===message goes here===
.
quit

Cheers,
Steven
