Here is an online decription, which says you need a number after helo/HELO

I had to type anumber after the helo. 1111 worked.
Otherwise it complained about no domain name.
It accepted my email address here at sdf.lonestar.org ormail from:your-email-address
my partner's email address at stu.wccnet.org (the incoming server)
I typed rcpt:keesan AT sdf.lonestar.orgrcpt:recipient-email-address
"Command unrecognized: "rcpt:.....
I tried rcpt to:keesan AT sdf.lonestar.org
'Relaying denied'.
Same for various other addresses.
What is this about? I Think I gave my partner's wccnet address as from,
but will try it again.
The answer is:
Sender OK - I can send from another domain or wccnet.org.
Rcpt must be at wccnet.org to get 'recipient ok', but if I try to send
to myself at another address (sdf) 'relaying denied'.
For wccnet, anyway, this telnet method of sending mail can only be used (by anyone, apparently) to send mail TO someone at wccnet.org and nowhere else (or nowhere that I tried). I wonder if I could send mail TO anyone if I just knew the name of their outgoing (sic) mail server.
The incoming server is stu.wccnet.org, outgoing is mail.wccnet.org, nad I used mail.wccnet.org to send mail to the account AT wccnet.org (college).
This is the same place that issued students ftp accounts with names starting in'.' which ftpput cannot handle. The account is free if you take one course a year ($300 plus books).
I will try sending via a couple of ISPs.
Can you send mail via mail.wccnet.org even if your mail account is not there?Assuming I got this working, can I use a precomposed file instaed ofdata

typing the mail online?
