By multiplexer do you mean a 'Y', a gadget that lets you plug in two phone
cords into one phone outlet?

We plug the phone into the internal modem (where it says 'tel') and then
run another cord from 'line' jack to the next computer modem
'tel' jack and then from there out the 'line' jack to the fax-phone
switch 'tel', and from there also to answering machine and fax machine.
No multiplexer needed unless you count the switch.

With the multiplexer, do I run from the modems' 'line' to both halves of
the Y? If so, why not just run the line between the two modems directly?
I am probably misunderstanding here.

Would this method also work for testing phones without dialing out,
running the two phone cords to a Y, plugging it in to get a dial tone,
then unplugging it? Or for testing fax machines? We have been looking
for some way to do this.
