What init string is the ppp-on routine using? That works fine.
I usually use AT&F for everything. AT&F1 for sportster to get hardware
flow control. That is the default for microcom (AT&F appears on the
screen if you just type microcom and it tests every port).

Kermit needs ncurses. I might use it anyway if I can't get microcom
working, otherwise just copy over ftp and ncurses from BL1. Another
reason not to make BL1 go away - we can copy things from it.
