BL1 will work on that machine.

We have been running links 2.1.9 on BL2. I would be
surprised if it worked on BL1.

The svgalib in BL1 is very old and very small. It only
does VGA and does not work with programs that try to set
higher resolutions. It also lacks some graphical routines
that were added in later versions of svgalib.

It is a method of displaying graphics without X. BL1 uses
svgalib for displaying GIFS in links, for the minesweeper
game, for the orb screensaver and for the "Linux Inside"
logo.
