Karl, there is clearly something wrong with the Linux computer if it cannot display the first word of the Hebrew Bible correctly, as below. This word was not corrupted by any mail server, nor by the Linux system, because it appeared correctly in your reply to me.

I would be extremely surprised if any public mail servers, at least those supporting the standard POP3, SMTP and IMAP protocols, continue to strip out character set references. Such mail servers would quickly lose a considerable amount of traffic. Some private in-house mail servers, especially those using private protocols, may do so. And some webmail systems also do not support Unicode. But if you are using a standards-compliant mail client like Thunderbird/Mozilla or Outlook (Express) but cannot receive Unicode, there is a fault in your mail server sufficiently serious that you should complain.
