Knew it was 'iffy' when I planted it - and followed AJ Bullard's recommendation to plant it with graft union below grade - so that when (not if) it froze back, it would be able to resprout. It did... for 3 consecutive winters. Would vigorously regrow to 8-10 ft... but kill back to the ground - and those winters were pretty mild, compared to the two just past. I never got any fruit... though one year, it was defoliated by a freak early frost, re-leafed and bloomed - and the fruits were the size/length you'd expect of Pakistan - but was unable to ripen them before real winter arrived. Finally pulled it out. Plants also have minimum temperatures that they will tolerate. My guess is that Pakistan mulberry, like many other subtropical plants, will survive short periods of temperatures near zero degrees F. when fully dormant, but no more. I doubt that the plant would survive the low temperatures of Vermont even when fully dormant. But I hope I am wrong. I currently grow Pakistan in Zone 5a, in a pot that will move to my unheated basement in winter. Here are a few; Liza Greenman, Fruit Exploring for Millennials; Nick Howard, Fruit Breeding for the Backyard Grower; Jim Riddle, owner and operator of Blue Fruit Farm speaking on culture and marketing of blueberries, elderberries, blackcurrant and aronia; Dan Busey, Saving Heirloom Seeds; Dell Christianson, Foliar Nutrition for Fruit Trees; Jacquelyn Kuehn, The Future of NAFEX; Harry Hoch, owner Hoch Orchards, Operating a Farm Fruit Market; Ron Dickie, Cultivating and Marketing Strawberries; Paul Bingham, Accessing the ARS (USDA) Germplasm Repository and Obtaining Materials and Designing Edible Landscapes; Brian Nelson, Spotted Wing Drosophila; Oriana Kruszewski, Asian Pears for the Upper Midwest; Bob Purvis, Growing Apricots in the Cold North. Contact Bob Purvis or Pete Scott to make arrangements for your presentation. Better hurry as the roster is nearly full and there may be some openings due to cancellations. If we have extra presentations we may continue at 7:00 PM. The auction is also planned for Thursday evening. The Friday bus tour presently has 5 stops scheduled. This will be a full, interesting day. We began the day with a visit to Ron?s Barry Farm in Minnesota operated by Ron and Peggy Dickie where they cultivate strawberries and asparagus. Another stop is the Blue Fruit Farm where they have 4 acres of aronia, blackcurrant, blueberry and elderberries. Owner Jim Riddle will also address us during the technical sessions. Lunch is planned for the Hoch Apple Orchard catered by the Harry Hoch family who operate the orchard, farm market and kitchen. After lunch we travel to Ecker?s Apple Orchard where they grow Cortland and Honey Crisp and sell caramel apples and apple pie in their farm market. We plan to also visit Blue House Blueberries, primarily a you pick operation. Owner Steve Nice will give us a tour of their orchard where they cultivate and market blueberries, blue ice plums, honeyberry (haskap) and aronia. We will return at 5 PM for a short rest before the start of the banquet and wine tasting. Have a fruit wine that you are proud of? Bring a few bottles to impress fellow members. Do you have favorite a wine made by a local winery, ask them to donate a few bottles for the publicity. There will also be a cash bar prior to the banquet. Our scheduled speaker is Steven Murray who has traveled extensively in China, a very knowledgeable young man well-versed on foreign fruits. At last year?s annual meeting Steven made a short presentation of fruits that he observed and photographed. He has promised to give more details about many of the interesting fruits. Following the banquet will be the annual business meeting and election of officers. A car caravan trip to Seed Savers Exchange near Decorah, Iowa is being planned for Saturday, July 25. The conference center has bent the rules for us not only in allowing wine tasting before the banquet they are also going to allow us to serve homemade cookies that include fruit and nuts at Thursdays coffee breaks. We will also have a limited a number of pastries at the breaks from the Inn?s catering service. While you?re in LaCrosse Wisconsin you can also plan to attend the Northern Nut Growers Annual Meeting July 26 through 28. See their website, nutgrowing.org. Also notable is 'korean', which I assume is the same as Kokuso 20. __________________ nafex mailing list nafex at lists.ibiblio.org Northamerican Allied Fruit Experimenters subscribe/unsubscribe|user config|list info: http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/nafex message archives http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/nafex Google message archive search: site: lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/nafex [searchstring] nafex list mirror sites: http://ifneb.blogspot.com IFNEB Blog http://groups.google.com/group/permaculturelist http://groups.google.com/group/nafexlist https://sites.google.com/site/nafexmailinglist Avant Geared? http://sites.google.com/site/avantgeared From qazingulaza at gmail.com Tue Jun 2 08:03:56 2015 From: qazingulaza at gmail.com (mIEKAL aND) Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2015 07:03:56 -0500 Subject: [nafex] NAFEX annual meeting 2015 In-Reply-To: <556D1800.6030508@gmail.com> References: <556D1800.6030508@gmail.com> Message-ID: Are the presentations happening on Thursday? Good Morning Lawrence, I always received copies of my own messages through ibiblio when I had the AOL address. Doesn't make sense that I should not be receiving it through Gmail. I really believe the problem lies at ibiblio not Gmail. In the past more than once I've been blocked by ibiblio if I included a picture in a message or included attachments. So when I don't get a copy of my own message I can't but help wondering if I've done something wrong once again and ibiblio has blocked me once again. As I'm using Mozilla I signed on directly with Gmail to see if Gmail wasn't passing it on to Mozilla. Yes, I clicked on the view all messages at Gmail which would allow me to see anything their security blocked. My ibiblio messages aren't at Gmail either. What doesn't make sense to me is why isn't ibiblio passing my messages through to Gmail as it did when using AOL? One reason I like to see my messages come back to me is too often a form such as the registration form gets re-margined and and so the printed copy isn't usable by the reader. And I don't like to attach a PDF due to past problems with ibiblio blocking attachments. I understand their security concerns and the reason for blocking attachments. But more than once in the past they have turned me off due to attachments and then you get me turned back on then they turned me back off again. I don't like to assume my messages are getting through. You know the old expression, assume "(_ass_ _u_ _me)_ makes an ass /of/ u /& /me." Looks to me like there should be a way to have ibiblio pass my Gmail originated messages back to me just as it did with AOL. Lawrence, I really appreciate all your help to me personally and what you do for NAFEX. I just checked your account and everything is normal as it has been all along. Again: when you send email from Gmail to the nafex list Gmail stores that email in Sent Mail folder. _That_ is your copy of the email you sent to the list; ibiblio will not send you another copy, giving you a duplicate. So, look in your Gmail Sent Mail folder for all the posts you send to this list through Gmail and you will find everything there. Something else you need to do is: 1) not allow Gmail to sort your email and organize your folders 2) fix this by going to your inbox, clicking on the little star/flower/gear icon on the far right, left click once and then click on 'settings' 3) then at the top string of menu options click on Inbox 4) then do the following: a) make sure Inbox Type is 'Default' and not anything else b) make sure the Categories is set to 'Inbox' - put a check in the Inbox checkbox This way all your email goes to Inbox only until you create filter Labels or mark individual email as Important and/or Starred In the past more than once I've been blocked by ibiblio if I included a > picture in a message or included attachments. > Than can not happen now. I have set the maximum size limit for an attached or inline message to twenty megabytes (20 MB) and the list is configured to allow attachments of several types, including .PDF's, images, Text Files of various types including RTF's, Word documents an of course plain ascii text files. If anyone has difficulty sent attachments of those types please let me know so I can fix the problem. If you send a form, i.e. registration, as an attachment it should (will) come through to all recipients in its original form, unchanged by ibiblio or Gmail. > So when I don't get a copy of my own message I can't but help wondering if > I've done something wrong once again and ibiblio has blocked me once again. > As I'm using Mozilla I signed on > It doesn't work that way. > directly with Gmail to see if Gmail wasn't passing it on to Mozilla. Wondering if anyone has tried *weeder geese* in areas like this? I have forest garden areas with understory grasses and herbs. Now at 10years most of the work is keeping the rampant vegetation down. Which is a great problem because all the biomass feeds the soil. But Im thinking of trying weeder geese and in your case, Jay, this might work as well. But beyond the headlines, hidden in South Sinai?s mountain valleys, lie hidden orchards ? tiny patches of green life dating back to biblical times and tended to by dedicated Bedouin from the Gabaliya tribe. I traveled to the Sinai desert in 2012 to photograph the remaining Gabaliya garden owners. The orchards could only be reached on foot through steep passes, so each morning I would hike to search them out. Sometimes I would just go for the day, and others for a week. Every orchard has its own distinct character, manifest in the way the walls were built, the crops that are grown and how they are stored and used. Some are meticulously maintained and are an essential source of food for families. Others are more symbolic. In one, a pair of old olive trees has been kept in memory of a family that spent many summers there. In addition to this photography collection, which has been published in a photo book, I produced a documentary film about the orchard keepers. The film describes the tender trap between a deep and meaningful tradition and the encroaching claws of modernity. The film will be screened and the book presented by Maria Golia (author of photography and Egypt) on June 10 at the Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) at 7 pm. www.TheOrchardKeepers.com From sam.brungardt at state.mn.us Mon Jun 15 10:50:25 2015 From: sam.brungardt at state.mn.us (Brungardt, Sam (MPCA)) Date: Mon, 15 Jun 2015 14:50:25 +0000 Subject: [nafex] Fruit-tree preservation effort continues in Colo. I am interested in small trees that can be easily netted for the integrated urban landscape. the fluffy one _____________________________________________________________ The Free Email with so much more! =====> http://www.MuchoMail.com <===== From sam.brungardt at state.mn.us Mon Jun 22 14:10:04 2015 From: sam.brungardt at state.mn.us (Brungardt, Sam (MPCA)) Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2015 18:10:04 +0000 Subject: [nafex] Princes of Persian fruit: the joys of growing quinces and medlars (Telegraph.co.uk) Message-ID: <1268E36B214F7D4F968B0285BF5CF3E40577C7A5@055-CH1MPN1-032.055d.mgd.msft.net> Telegraph.co.uk Princes of Persian fruit: the joys of growing quinces and medlars (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/fruitandvegetables/11686769/Princes-of-Persian-fruit-the-joys-of-growing-quinces-and-medlars.html ) Telegraph.co.uk So in the UK it makes sense to give them a sheltered position so the fruit ... Message-ID: <9626955.1435621800845.JavaMail.root@elwamui-hound.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Mr. Fluffy, 'Northstar' is also my favorite all-around pie cherry. Perhaps a bit surprising since my 36 years of orcharding have been in the hot & humid Southeastern US. In my Georgia orchard, I had 'Montmorency', Starkspur Montmorency, 'Meteor' and 'North Star'. All were good, but 'North Star' was the most productive and healthy. Since moving to North Carolina, I've grown 'North Star', 'Surefire', 'Balaton', 'Carmine Jewel' and recently added 'Romeo'. The 'Balaton's were terrible. Mediocre quality fruit on an unhealthy tree. 'Surefire' was very productive if we had a good chilling winter and the cherries were very good quality, but most winters we don't get enough chilling to please 'Surefire' and it eventually died. 'Carmine Jewel' finally produced well this year and the cherry quality was very good. It is a healthy tree, also. I have had problems in past years with CJ and brown rot, if we get a lot of rain during ripening season. Of all the pie cherries I've grown, 'North Star' remains the favorite, although if Carmine Jewel continues to behave like this year, it will finally be a cherry to equal North Star. The trees also stay small, like North Star. I go Charlotte/Moorseville frequently and low the surrounding countryside. Are you able to grow sweet cherries at all? I am helping a Russian immigrate in Moorseville with her yard and am at a disadvantage since I do not know the conditions there. I surmise that sweet cherries are far too difficult. the fluffy one --- marillen at earthlink.net wrote: From: Anton Callaway To: mailing list at ibiblio - Northamerican Allied Fruit Experimenters Subject: Re: [nafex] North Star vs Meteor vs ?
