A different approach: Drop KDE3 spells and include Trinity
(http://www.trinitydesktop.org/) instead, which is the maintained KDE3. It
also conveniently installs into /opt/trinity.

Generally, for such monolithic stuff like KDE, I am rather fond of the old
strategy to put it into a separate prefix, even for the current version.
Putting things into /usr just likes to mess up during migration phase to new
releases ... and we know: You have to run KDE-old and KDE-new side-by-side
for some time until KDE-new really can replace KDE-old. If ever. Outside apps
using KDE libs are sweet sugar icing on top of the mess... but if they're
build with the proper prefix, no conflict shall occur.

That being said, I'm off KDE personally for some time now ... and I dunno if
I'll bring my folks up to KDE4 in any time. They got LXDE with some trinity
apps (namely KMail and Kaddressbook, which _perhaps_ has full functionality
in KDE 4.7 again).

Alrighty then,

Thomas.

PS: Yeah, I don't know how long Trinity will survive, but they managed to do
releases...
PPS: Instead of /opt/kdeX, we could use /usr/bloatware/kdeX;-)
