A couple of other thoughts. You can buy grafted fruit trees with multiple cultivars grafted on. So you can buy a peach with an early, mid and late season variety. You can also dig a bigger hole and put three fruit trees in one hole. Checkout http://davewilson.com/homegrown/advice/plant_trees.html for detailed instructions on how to do this. Just scroll down the page and you will find the section. Also somebody mentioned cherry trees. Minnie Royal and Royal Lee are now the champs of lowchill sweet cherries, but Lapins and Stella also work.

Stack functions, recycle system outputs in every way you can, and think in 4 dimensions.  Some people grow fine permaculture gardens on porches alone!

Did you watch Mollison's urban permaculture series?  Espaliered fruit trees can be used in a small space, and do double duty as a beautiful living fence.  As long as you're not squeemish about a little hortitorture!

Best of luck!

oh p.s.

After watching a couple of videos about this, I might use pots and planters
on the south facing front porch for my first year's exploration, (it's
shielded from the intense summer sun) in order to get some things going
straight away.  It's at least as big as the area I had planned to garden.  I
can then do the work on the space in the yard, allow it time to amend
itself, and then maybe plant in there next year.  I can use the walls for
trellises, and posts for poles....it could be fun!  Maybe just plant a tree
or two adjacent to the plot for now.  It's got good air circulation, and
would have perfect drainage.

What'cha think about that idea? (Am I being a chicken???  One video talked
about the difficulty of getting a garden started over building rubble.)

Thanks again for everything.

In only a 12' diameter space I'd have to agree with dward, that an
herb
spiral would be the way to go!  You could always add in some veggies
too
- bush beans/peas for N-fixation upslope of a heavy N feeder like
broccoli,
greens, or squash, with tomato or cukes hanging over the edge in the
appropriate sun sector....

So many options.  Do have fun with it, and post pictures!

Hi Dward,

Moved here from MA.  It's very very very different here, and very
lovely in
its own way.
I definitely want to grow herbs, so I'll check out the concept of herb
spirals.
No good place inside to grow sprouts.  I've got some cilantro growing
in
the
window and it's very leggy.
But, we have a very long growing season down here so I'm sure I can
do some
sprouting on the porch.
Thanks for the idea.
