Aloha,

That makes sense. What I'm still wondering is how an author gets
moderation points. One possibility is that for every object you
write, you get the ability to moderate another object up or down.

Has potential to lead to some folks writing lots of trivial or (semi-)bogus objects to get moderation points.

Another would be you get one moderation point a day. Or at random
intervals you get 5 points like on slashdot... something like that.

These would seem more equitable...slow but steady and equal flow to registered users, so they are more likely to use them based on protracted and thoughtful observation... :-)
