I paint my trees with a mixture of spray lime (dolomite), water and a bit of latex, but NOT the whole tree and buds, just the trunk, from the base all the way to the first lateral branch, in the Fall. This is the way it is traditionnally done in Europe although I don't believe it was latex paint but just spray lime and water. There is a dual purpose: slowing down blooming in the Spring by cooling the tree and protecting the trunk against sunburn. Just paint the mixture on, you make an awful mess spraying latex paint on the surroundings, yourself and your clothes.
A mulch applied early Spring also slows down blooming.

A while back I read a summary of some prof. at MU trying to delay blossom by spraying the whole tree with a dilute latex paint/water mix. The idea was to keep the sun off the buds as well as the trunk. Can't remember how long it supposedly delayed bloom, but I'm thinking it was a weeks delay.
Interesting, Mark. I might try that next year. I did wonder when I
painted the trunks how far up I was supposed to go.
And my neighbors think I'm loony already, so I might as well go all the way.
