CAP Kansas 123 has access to 2 fixed wing planes and one has the G-1000 glass
panel and the other is used as a towplane (single engine) for the glider the
AirForce gave us. I will forward some of this info to my commander, but it
sounds like the bigger planes have it covered.
My dad flew a P3 for the Navy when it was used for antisubmarine warfare
and to drop sonobuoys along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. They are workhorses who
can drop a load very accurately and some were modified with extra fuel tanks
for longer flights. I did not know there were many in active use for
mission, but I am not surprised. His squadron comrads (VO-67) are putting
one in a flight museum and I have had the priviledge of seeing one in person.

How big are they going with fixed wing aircraft? The spotters are usually
very light, L-19's, O-1, O-2 size but the aerial tankers are growing in
size.
I saw what looked like a P-3 doing drops on TV and I know that there are
C-130's with water dump off the ramp available. Evergreen Air has converted
747's to water droppers-- 140 knots and 500 feet for 250 000 pounds or so of
water and retardant. Sounds like not a place to be when the water falls.
