I'm guessing then that no one measures exact amounts, as in 1/2 ounce of lettuce, 1/4 ounce this or that? Just cut, wash, dry and bag all of it, and it gets mixed as you go? That would be simpler.
Vole question:
We have about 3/4 an acre of Cole crops planted, and all that is left is the stem sticking out of ground. All plants completely bare of leaves. I took the dog and walked the entire perimeter of the field and scared up one rabbit, which is the usual culprit when we start seeing this type of damage. I'd been reading about the voles and was wondering if that could be what is wiping out my field. I see millions of holes in the ground, as if someone came along and stuck a hoe handle in the ground every few yards. But, no tunnels that I can see, no raised areas at all.
We did have tons of birds out there, mostly killdeer. There again though, I've read that they eat insects, not plants.
We sprayed pepper spray over the entire field last night, but with rain in the forecast today it will be a temporary fix at best.
I thought with the snow cover we had over the weekend that what ever was doing this would go away, but if anything the damage is worse.

Moles. I set unbaited snap traps all over the place in one of the tunnels. They bump into them just like voles do. The holes showed up after I turned in compost and planted the new crop of seeds. If it's not one thing today it's something else tomorrow. As my husband reminds me, "Well Rob, at least it wasn't a moose in there."
