A Farmers' Market should be a promotion of fresh food by default.
But from what I have read through this list, Farmers' Markets are used
for many purposes aside from promoting fresh food (I am referring
to saving downtowns and other such purposes).
I respectfully suggest that individual farmers in individual communities
develop their own plans for markets and schools when it comes to
promoting fresh foods. I make this suggestion because different
regions have different growing schedules and different tastes in
food. Adjusting to those schedules and tastes during the planning
stage makes for better results.
For individual farmers, using product sheets to explain individual crops
at market is the best way to start educating consumers at market.
I have some ideas about promoting fresh foods in schools but
they are too long for this post, and to a large degree depend
on how big the school is, the students' ages and the willingness
of the school district or administration to grant time to farmers
willing to teach about foods and put on interactive demonstrations.
Let's keep the discussion going because it offers a big payoff
if acted upon and carried through.
