Biz:

I have 5 dwarf trees on a wire trellis; 4 on Ottawa-3, the other on a wild dwarf. Each arm of each tree is or should be a different variety. 8 arms per tree (4 either side). The upper tier is not totally complete but when complete I should have about 40 varieties of apples. I have no experience with M.26. The lowest wire is 18" off the ground, the others are 16" apart. If I was to do it over, I would raise the lower wire 4" and leave the others at 16" apart. I would think 12" apart would be unmanageable based on my experience with 16" apart. I do not think there would be a relationship to the space between horizontals and annual growth output without really having away of knowing. I use the Lorette system of pruning with the espaliers which works exceptionally well with pears and some varieties of apples. Some apples varieties seem to resent it so I'll be experimenting with certain varieties to see if I can get better results.

Thanks Tom.

Okay Joe,

I'll pose that question to you. If one is looking to create more of a visual
hedge, using a wire trellis approach, how close together would you place the
horizontals? If you went every twelve inches, versus fifteen to eighteen
inches, would you cause an M.26 to stunt out? Or, once the tree gets older,
would it fill in too much and start to become unmanageable? Is there a
relationship to the space between horizontals and annual growth output?

Also, have you seen any espalier or trellis work where branches have been
grafted for a number of different varieties? I'm thinking of using my
trellised apples as a form of scionwood storage. Instead of grafting
multiples on one tree, and I have had great fun making what my husband calls
"frankentrees", I hoping to use just some of the trellis branches as a form
of a live library.

Thanks, Bizmark
