Hi Tom,

This project sounds wonderful. I hope you've had time to take photographs to
track the tree's progress. Out of curiosity - what kind of crab apple and
which espalier shape?

As for the secondary branches, I'd vote for removing them, so the tree's
efforts are directed to the desired branches. Also, check for new growth
every few days and then gently rub away any new buds. I do this with grafts
and all young whips. Anything below knee level gets removed. I only winter
prune when I want to trigger specific growth - ie; establish a new leader.
Otherwise, I opt for summer pruning.

Hopefully everyone's trees are surviving this heat wave. We've had lots of
leaf roller activity so far, but overall, growth has still been quite
strong. The hard part has been removing tons of fruitlets on the younger
trees, so most of the energy goes into tree growth and not so much into
fruit development. Many of the trees have only two or three apples, so we
get a taste, or can verify that the tree's identity is correct. We also
bagged the apples so we can avoid treating for codling moth, etc.

Hey Tom - I forgot to ask you earlier - how did your inarching grafts work?
Did your tree manage the survive?

Cheers, and stay cool, Bizmark.

Hello All,

Espieler question...

I am in the second year of a crabapple espieler. Training and pruning
main branches is going well.

My question is the secondary branches growing away from the wall. Should
branches be removed that grow outside the desired shape, as necessary
throughout the growing season, or left for annual spring pruning?

I do not want the energy wasted on branches that will be removed, while
the tree is still being trained to it's espieler frame.

Experience, opinions?

Thanks,
Tom
