Hi Tom

Thanks for posting the picture. Another question or two for you - how high
from the ground is your first horizontal? Roughly how far apart are your
horizontals? What rootstock is your Baskatong grafted onto? How long are you
intending for the branches to grow? Is the apple sun reactive - meaning will
you get blush or red on one half, and the background colour on the back
half? ( This could look really cool! )

I'm quite fascinated since I'm preparing what you might call an apple hedge,
and need to establish a second row of trellis wire in the next few weeks to
start training the next row of branches this summer. The trees are placed
six feet apart and I will have to ponder what to do with branch overlap. The
first horizontal is placed around 28 inches off the ground to stay clear of
the normal snow accumulation - which I was strongly advised to do, and went
along with that direction. All my other trees are clear from the knee down.
Has anyone else in the group grown trees this tight together for hedging or
trellising purposes? I would love to get info.

Glad to hear that your other tree survived. These mice and voles are nasty
to our trees.

Cheers, Bizmark.

Hello,

We had a Tinsely Quince die in the orchard. This was replaced with an Ida
Red (price too good to refuse 60% off).

I am using a Baskatong Crab for the espieler. The shape is simple lateral
rows. It is doing well. (image attached) It will go four rows high. As
you can see, I already dealt with the secondary branches.

Last years inarching, due to mouse damage failed. The seedlings failed,
and were pretty whispy for grafting. The good news is that there are a
couple of strips (3 - 1") of bark left on the tree and it looks like it
will make it. So the inarching failed, but the patient may live.

Thanks for asking,
Tom
