I never do any dormant pruning on espaliers. I normally prun off secondary branches on apple in mid July back to the rosette of leafs at its base (about ΒΌ"). This will usually force 3 or so new buds, hopefully one or two will become fruiting spurs.

Hello All,

Espieler question...

I am in the second year of a crabapple espieler. Training and pruning
main branches is going well.

My question is the secondary branches growing away from the wall. Should
branches be removed that grow outside the desired shape, as necessary
throughout the growing season, or left for annual spring pruning?

I do not want the energy wasted on branches that will be removed, while
the tree is still being trained to it's espieler frame.

Experience, opinions?

Thanks,
Tom
