I planning on purchasing my first car in the next couple of weeks. I'll probably sign up for consumer reports and some other sites as well. I'm looking at new as opposed to used but that's not written in stone. I'm looking for something under 16k, with good mileage and moderate pimpability factor.

I strongly suggest you consider getting a car with higher mileage than 16K.... There's a big drop-off in price after 30K and 60K, but the cars still have lots of life in them, and so they are much better values. Sure, decades ago cars were unreliable, but most modern car makers have products that will go into the upper 100s with just regular maintenance. I drove my $12,000 Saturn to 160,000, for example, and its still a reliable car for its new owner at 180,000.

It may be just me, but I think its ridiculous to spend such a high percentage of one's income on a quickly depreciating asset.
