Wise choice to think this decision through. Others haven't been so methodical:

Torch My Ride

http://cnn.edmunds.com/advice/specialreports/articles/115584/article.html

"People will lease a car for 84 months with zero down and they have some outrageous payment," said Rowe. "They start to realize they are living beyond their means."

The responsible solution would be to advertise the car for sale, pay off the loan and switch to a more affordable ride (even leased cars can be bought and then sold to get out of high payments). The irresponsible solution some people choose is to burn the vehicle and let the insurance company pay what is owed.

The article gets some jabs in at car salesmen:

In Texas, a car salesman was arrested after offering his customers what he called a "rotisserie program." He would have their cars torched; then, after they collected on the insurance, he sold them a new car.

The Consumer Reports guide to used cars was invaluable to me during my
purchase. I mainly used it in correlation with http://autos.msn.com/
because the MSN reliability reports were a second set of data (sourced
from mechanics that closely tracked with the CR's reader sourced data)
that had the added benefit of citing what parts or subsystems were prone
to long-term wear or failure with a cost estimate for repair/replacement.

I bought my undermileage Honda Prelude from CarMax when I was in the
process of relocating from RTP to Charlotte.

I would use this argument for not-pimpin' whatever you aquire but it is
your choice.
