Down south in Harnett County, they/we are a dry county. ABC stores, yes, anything else, no. You *can* get beer/wine at the grocery store though.

So anyway, last year, or was it 2 years ago, I don't remember, it came up in Dunn, the largest town in the county (I refuse to call it a city) that sits astride I-95 that there should be a Liquor by the Drink referendum on the ballot.

HUGE billboards went up saying how liquor and alcohol were the devil's work and all kinds of crap, and this was the 3rd time this had happened (the referendum), but this time it managed to pass.

Now, you can order mixed drinks in many of the restaurants (but not McDonald's yet), but the fact that the people working there are still from Harnett county prohibits them from knowing very much including how to make about 99% of mixed drinks.

Arghhh....I'm just glad that I'll be in raleigh when I turn 21

I think you underestimate the forces you are going up against. We still
have dry countyies and some extremely conservative politicians catering to
the religious right. Though I have noticed things get better in the 20
years I've lived in NC. But if you feel you must, fight on. I think you
think about the fact that Jack Daniels is produced in a dry county
Tennesee up until 1995. It still has no liquor by the drink. So in the
grand scheme of things we're doing ok....
