David:
I currently have Earthlink cable modem, over TW/RR's cable.
Largely I'm happy with their service. The price (when I converted from TW/RR to Earthlink) a year or so back) was a bit lower than TW/RR's. There have been some snafu's with contacting Earthlink and having them say "you need to contact TW for that problem. But these have been minor and Earthlink's been good.

...Now if there's a problem with the physical cable itself, yes, it does affect the service. ...like if a car hits a pole or something awful like that !-) But it seems rare & I haven't had much problem, and when I did the service folks were pretty responsive (once upon a time TW actually came out and replaced the drop from the street to the house, and another time replaced the Surfboard modem). ...don't get me wrong, I'm not a big TW fan; I'm just reporting that the Earthlink over TW/RR lines cable modem's been working reasonably well.

All these things being said, I'm considering Earthlink's dsl as a lower cost alternative to their cable. But I haven't had a chance to study or act on this. I'm also hesitant because, like I say, the cable modem actually's been working, fairly well (it does seem to be slow sometimes ...similar to what a few INWer's reported in recent postings, tho, not terrible enough to do something about it.)

yeah, so, overall, a thumbs up. I'll be interested to know what you decide.

I know Earthlink runs their own DNS/mail/news servers and that they have (supposedly) better performance, but I still cannot envision a scenario where their leased lines are impervious to whatever problems are evident in RoadRunner's service.

I would love to hear any and all opinions on this topic, as I have been seriously considering a move to Earthlink cable modem (mostly as a cost-saving measure). However, I don't want to sacrifice service levels or step into a situation riddled with problems. After reading Sarah's account below (and remembering my own previous headaches with RR's lackluster DNS service - which have supposedly been fixed!) I would pay anything to avoid such hassles.

Thanks!

i'll add in my recent TW/RR experiences....

I arrive home last night just in time to watch the basketball game, to find
that the TW/RR cable is completely out, for the 3rd time, in as many weeks.
first time it was out, it magically corrected itself after about 20 hours.
hours later, it then went out for 3 days, until the cable guy could come out
- we too got a song-n-dance - that it was the "booster" that must have
gotten a power surge, and was shot... (the "booster" was put into place to
solve previous problems). he took the booster out, and plugged the cable
straight into the box, and all other systems were a go (2 other boxes and
the computer). he said he would place a call to have them put in a "new,
fatter" cable from the main line to our house, to solve all the problems (no
booster would be required).... that was Dec. 27th.... we called yesterday
(prior to knowing our cable was out) to ask whether or not he indeed put in
a call to have the cable replaced - that question stumped the "tech guy" on
the other end of the phone... so, they have said they'll send someone out to
check the "signal" sometime between 8am and 12 on Sat. THEN, I arrive home
(AFTER this conversation with the TW "tech guy") to find the cable out
completely - and well, since we already have someone coming out on Sat.,
we'll just have to wait (unless one of us wants to spend 4 hours at home, on
a day between now and then, waiting for them), or so they said when we
called yet again.

here's my problem... we go for long stretches when the TW and RR cable work
just fine. Then, everything breaks, and it take numerous calls and visits
(and many days go by) for them to fix the "problem". what's up with that?
and these recent problems didn't start until those "50% faster" ads started
showing up on TV...hmmm... makes me curious about what they've changed...

I had an issue with the RR cablemodem, but it was eventually
resolved. I had the RR tech here once and she gave me a song-n-dance
about my coax cables being old and decrepit. They put another splitter
on and it seemed to improve for a while. Finally, Nileen couldn't get
out for a day or two and this put it over the edge. She gets testy
if she can't get to misshunt.com so I called again.
Another young lady came out and looked at it. (Of course, they said
they would be out during the day, but this person showed up at 9:30pm!)
She said there was a problem out on the pole and some people in bucket
trucks would be out to fix it. That came to pass the next day and we
have been up most of the time since then. Our wires probably are old,
but so far this hasn't been an emergency.
