I would much rather live thru a depression than a hyper-inflation.

In a depression, families can squeeze in together, pool their part-time money
and the pooled money will still buy things.

In a hyper-inflation, families will squeeze in together, all be working
full-time and the pooled money won't be worth diddly-squat 2 hours after pay
is received.

I suspect that many of us really don't want to live through an actual great
depression. 10-15% unemployment is scary, 20-30% would take another world war
to bring us out of it.

I agree with Lynda; I'd ask for something that didn't cost the employer any
money, but gave me more big blocks of time off. Working 9-5 Mon-Fri really
sucks; you can't get anything done with other businesses without taking
time off.

Negotiating wouldn't work here, because the few jobs that are available are
minimum wage retail, and the 'new guy' gets the shifts no one else wants.
With the high unemployment, they don't have to cut any deals. Unless you
have a teaching certificate or mechanic skills, there's nothing else; once
people get a job, they don't quit. The same people have been working at the
supermarket for years. I've been waiting for 5 years for someone to leave
either the county library or the University library 15 miles away and open
up a job (I have an MLS).

Bah. I'd still rather be a farmer...I must have some skills at it, because I
make more per year than the dairy farmers around here (not a big
accomplishment, since they all lose money every year). But what I make still
won't pay the bills. I need a sugar daddy (or a gas well).
