Bev, you know how an Ancho pepper tastes in Chilis Rellenos? A little spice
but not very hot, just the right taste. A sweet bell pepper would make a
poor Relleno. Jalapenos or Hanbaneros would make a poor one as well.

That's how it is with leeks. There are some things like leek soup that just
wouldn't be right with onions of any kind.

It's true that leeks don't grow much in hot weather, but they don't much
deteriorate either. If you get them started in the late winter or early
spring,
they will stagnate in the summer but continue growing in the fall. Another
advantage with leeks is that it is just about impossible to freeze them out.
They wouldn't have survived this winter's cold here, but most winters you can
leave them in the ground and pull them when you want them.
